The Wren and Cuff Your Face 70's is a fuzz pedal based on Arbiter's famous Fuzz Face. Created in 1966, the Fuzz Face literally revolutionized the electric guitar in the hands of Jimi Hendrix. This inimitable grain is one of the most iconic sounds in guitar history.
At the time, Ivor Arbiter had the idea of integrating a very simple circuit within a microphone stand. This allowed the pedal to hold securely in place on stage where the pedalboard concept did not yet exist. Problem, the manufacturing quality of the original models could not be more random. Jimi would buy them in packs of 20 (it was worth about $7 at the time) only to find 2 that sounded decent and would survive the equivalent of a few gigs. So many things and settings that no current guitarist would accept! This is where our Californian friends from Wren and Cuff come in by offering us an ultra faithful version of the original but without its faults!
Externally, forget the round shape of the microphone stand which is no longer suited to today's setups. We therefore switch to a small box with the addition of a Low-Cut button which will allow you to control the low frequencies which could be somewhat capricious on the original version. We find the classic Volume and Fuzz (gain) on the front and a 9V center + input to power the pedal. Inside, no more old school PCBs, but there is a pair of BC108C type NOS transistors, Mullard capacitor and a 3PDT True-Bypass type switch.
Once connected, it's time to set up our little magic formula. So how do you best use the Face 70's? Well on a clean channel that twists very slightly. A Fuzz Face is used like that and not otherwise! With a start on the knees, unsurprisingly, we have the whole panoply of sounds from the 70s. Jimi fans will appreciate it. This Silicon version offers you a rich drive without being intrusive, resolutely high-medium with a soft, mellow, never aggressive fuzzy grain. Compared to the Germanium version, the 70's is more high-gain and less low-mid oriented. It is also a little "cleaner" and precise than the latter. The controls are incredibly effective compared to the originals. With the Face 70's no loss of volume, progressive gain control over the entire race (and not over the last 5%) and above all the possibility of acting on the low end of the spectrum which can quickly be invasive with this type of effect. With the Low-Cut, you go through the mix and can adapt the thickness of the effect according to the guitar used.
In the end, Wren and Cuff offers us a modernized version of this great classic, manufactured in a very beautiful way and sold at a more than reasonable price. You retain the vintage vintage sound without the flaws!
