The Wren and Cuff Eye See '78 OG is a big muff type effects pedal, based on the rare EHX OP-AMP Big Muff π. This version having only been manufactured for 2 years, it is quite sought after because it is the little stinger of the lot! Indeed, between 1978 and 79, EHX decided to stop using traditional transistors and switch to more modern electronics (and to reduce costs). Mike Matthew therefore offers us the use of operational amplifiers (IC) instead of the usual 4 transistors (4 stage). The result? A unique muff, now offered in a "custom shop" version.
Very widely used by Billy Corgan, it is the basis of the Smashing Pumpkins sound, especially on the Gish album for those who would like to know how this Eye See 78 sounds.
Aesthetically, it takes the impressive OG case with a Volume, a Tone and a Distortion. It is also equipped with Tone Bypass like the original. This Tone Bypass allows you to bypass the EQ, which generates a boost in volume and midrange frequencies while giving a more “raw” side to the signal that comes out. Inside, it's typical Wren and Cuff, it's well made, with a quality PCB and components and above all, the same ICs from 1978 as the original, namely an RC4558NB and a UA741.
So how does this all sound? Basically, she's a muff on steroids. More gain, more aggressive, more “grungy”, perfect for grunge and punk bands. We find the same type of massive distortion as on older models but with a sharper and a little more metallic side. It also sounds straighter and crushes less which gives it a more modern sound signature perfect for big sound. As Bill Corgan says, this muff is “the ultimate super-gain VROOOM sound!” »

This modernized Custom Shop version, manufactured in a very beautiful way and sold at a more than reasonable price compared to that of the originals, is an excellent choice for those looking for an indestructible version of this “high-gain” oriented model.
