A simple little pedal that doesn't look like much, the LLA Custom CN81 is a vintage overdrive type effect pedal. It bases its circuit on an OPamp and a True Coil output transformer which gives it a unique sound signature.
Externally, you have to be honest, it doesn't break any bricks! A simple aluminum box, a small sticker and roll youth! OK, but when you open it, it's something else. Quality components, custom made transformer, PCB the thickness of a floor, it's no joke! In terms of controls, Push (Volume), Gain, Tone and voila!
Connected to a clean platform, Les Paul 59 in hand, everything at 12:00. First thing, you really have to supply it with 18V. Of course, it works at 9V, but you will gain a lot of headroom, so don't hesitate! Second thing, it's dense, very dense and round. But at the same time very open. There is air, it breathes and it is anything but artificially compressed. The dynamics are excellent, it perfectly cleans the volume knob and the active EQ allows maximum headroom depending on the settings. In short, it does not sound "pedal". With the Gain at 12:00 we have a light, fluid overdrive, with a solid mid front but nothing to do with a TS type pedal. By lowering the gain and raising the Tone a little, you get a nice boost that brings thickness. By pushing the Gain fully and the Tone also almost to the maximum, we recover harmonics, slamming and a very slight fuzzy side which reinforces the vintage color of this CN81. We get typical Larry Carlton, Bonamassa sounds. Sounds very linked, fluid and round.
In conclusion, the LAA Custom CN81 is a versatile overdrive with a unique and assertive sound signature. Its abundant headroom and wide frequency spectrum make it an excellent tool for those looking for an "amp-like" oriented vintage drive. An excellent choice from blues to heavy rock. Forza Italy!
