The Grobert Total Screamer is an Overdrive type effects pedal based on the legendary Ibanez Tube Screamer (yes, it's green!). Here, no TS-bla-bla with a small component changed here and there, we are on a real evolution with a plethora of new functions and a very largely modified circuit. Of course, the essence of the original pedal has been retained, Grobert's specialty being expanding the possibilities of a circuit to its maximum while retaining its characteristic sound signature.
There Total Screamer adopts a quality case which drastically extends the original controls of the historic model. One thing is certain, the controls are much more numerous than originally: Level (volume), Tone (EQ), Drive (gain), Voice (contour / presence), Dry (blend of the signal mixed in parallel), Booster (boost). There are 2 footswitches, one for the bypass, the other to activate the boost. Finally, the pedal offers two mini-switches.
- The first allows you to switch the pedal to 9-18V to gain headroom and dynamics
- The second allows you to switch from a drive generated by Silicone diodes (original) to a drive generated by a field effect transistor (MOSFET) for more level and articulation.
Plugged in with a Les Paul in hand, you immediately recognize the famous midrange bump typical of the TS. The Total Screamer offers more gain in reserve and an ultra malleable EQ section. We can of course use it on a clean channel and in this case, it will be an ultra versatile overdrive. Indeed, the boost is extremely effective and allows you to activate an additional gain stage. This combined with Voice controls and mini-switches, we obtain a real Swiss army knife. Another use, stacked on a saturated channel. On a Marshall or other, the Total Screamer allows you to awaken the beast that sleeps inside your amp. More gain, more compression, mids highlighted to get through the mix. That works! You can also change the order of the effects by choosing to apply the boost before or after the drive section.
The pedal blows very little, the construction is of high quality, the dynamics and attack are much superior to the original model. Clearly, it is a competition TS which stands out as a model of versatility.
