The Grobert Golden Legend is an Overdrive type effects pedal based on the legendary Klon Centaur (yes, it's golden!). Here, no lambda copy with a small component changed here and there, we are on a real evolution with a plethora of new functions and a very largely modified circuit. Of course, the essence of the original pedal has been retained, Grobert's specialty being expanding the possibilities of a circuit to its maximum while retaining its characteristic sound signature.
The Golden Legend adopts a quality case which drastically extends the original controls of the historic model (these were limited to 3). One thing is certain, there will be interaction: Level (volume), Tone (EQ), Drive (gain), Extra Gain (second gain stage), Dry (blend of the signal mixed in parallel), Booster ( boost). There are 2 footswitches, one for the bypass, the other to activate the boost. Finally, the pedal offers two mini-switches.
- The first allows you to activate a High Pass filter if you find the original a little too bright.
- The second allows you to strengthen the bottom of the spectrum and recover a little "boom" at the bottom.
The Golden Legend is a KLON and... everything you want the original pedal to do but can't do! The KLON, contrary to what many will tell you, is much more a Mid-boost than an overdrive. With the original, as soon as you push the gain, it tends to crash and not sound great. With the Golden Legend, you can use it like the original, stacked on a low gain OD (like John Mayer) to boost your signal and pass through the mix with this very particular dynamic. And on top of that, use it as a real overdrive and even more so with Extra Gain and boost which make it a real Swiss army knife. It's warm, open, with a forward high mid, but you can also get an OD that sweeps a wide spectrum of frequencies and gain. The attack is clean, it's fluid and it twists very nicely. It can also be used on a saturated channel or on a nice clean sound. The pedal is not finicky, it works on many amps and guitars and is very plug 'n play.
With the Golden Legend, Grobert offers us the "Klon-like" sound at an extremely well placed price. The pedal benefits from enormous versatility and a very wide range of drives. It will be perfect for those who do not have 1500 euros to spend on an original or who found the latter a little limited.
