The Xotic BB Preamp V1.5 is a pedal that needs no introduction as it is visible on countless pedalboards. It benefits from a perfect finish with quality components and PCB as well as multiple upgrades to adjust your sound in this version 1.5. From clean boost to strong OD, it offers you 30dB+ of boost and an active 2-band EQ up to ±15dB to sculpt your sound with maximum harmonics and very beautiful grain.
Connected to a pure clean channel, we immediately appreciate its silence and transparency. The Xotic BB Preamp V1.5 is not only true-bypass but also perfectly transparent. Super-Strat on the knees with everything at 12:00 we have a boosted TS type mid gain drive with a very widely expanded frequency spectrum. On simple pickups, we get a solid overdrive that crushes on attack and breathes. We have a slight compression just enough to bring out all the dynamics and the very rich harmonic content. It's dense!
The attack is straightforward, it sounds very amp-like and not narrow for a single second. The drive is rather open, with high mids quite forward without attenuating the attack.
A very interesting example setting: Gain at 10:00, Vol at 14:00, Treble at 14:00 and Bass at 12:00. With this, you have an ultra dynamic low gain OD that cuts through the mix. It's soft, fluid, with shime, it snaps and responds like clockwork.
By pushing the gain all the way up, with the volume at 12:00 and the EQ at 15:00, we obtain a truly superb drive, very fun to play and "forgiving" (it is forgiving). It's thick, fluid, with lots of harmonics and a big, very mellow attack. With single coils, it hits! (ask Andy Timmons). With humbucking, just add a slight clean boost and boom! Hello Bonamassa!
