The Strymon EC-1 is not just another “delay,” it’s a masterful fusion of the best vintage tape machines and modern overkill. A descendant of the revolutionary El Capistan, the EC-1 benefits from updated and refined algorithms to recreate the legendary sound of the 60s and the Binson Echorec, Maestro Echoplex EP-1 and 2, and Roland Space Echo. The team based its development on one machine in particular: a one-of-a-kind Echoplex EP-2, modded by Cesar Diaz, a legendary technician who has worked with Stevie Ray Vaughan, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, Neil Young, and more.
As always, the Californian brand remains faithful to its anodized aluminum case and has its latest compact format. The pedal benefits from an ultra-complete interface and connectivity. Inside, we remain on made in the USA with quality PCBs, selected components and colossal computing power thanks to its ARM Superscalar processor.
On the front, 5 buttons and a toggle switch. Time to adjust the delay time, Mix to blend the dry signal and the effect, Tape Age which acts on the aging of the tape (frequencies, attenuation of certain ranges), Repeats to adjust the number of repetitions and Mechanics to recreate all the interactions with the mechanical parts and in particular the reading head (detune, modulation, etc.). The toggle switch influences the gain of the tube preamp. It is unity gain on Low, at +6dB on Medium and at +12 dB on High.
We find, of course, a Tap Tempo with rhythmic subdivisions, enough to connect an expression pedal, a real Stereo, a complete MIDI implementation, a true bypass, a kill dry, and the usual Class A JFET pre-amp in the input stage which offers a unique response and dynamics.
In terms of sound, what makes the EC-1 truly unique is its overwhelming dTape technology that has no equivalent on the market. The algorithms meticulously reproduce every nuance of a real tape echo: from rich and dynamic saturation to slight / drastic imperfections induced by motor, head and tape wear fluctuations. Whether you are looking for clean repeats with warm tones, or complex and rich soundscapes to create a background with near-infinite detail; the EC-1 offers an extensive stereo field and a palette of sonic textures that are both nostalgic (Gilmour, Page, Brian May ...) and resolutely modern (for Ambient fans).
What can I say? The Strymon EC-1 is a new bomb, that sounds different from the El Capistan and gets straight to the point.
